Ovolo Inchcolm Brisbane, 5*

Just off a busy corner of one of Brisbane’s main arteries, Turbot St. The Inchcolm is also in the heart of the city’s medical specialist consulting rooms: as there are only four on-site parking spaces, valet parking ($40 [£25]) is the likely option if you are arriving by car. But it’s only a two-minute walk from Central Station, perfect if you are arriving by train from the airport. Within a few minutes' walk are Queensland’s oldest building, the 1828 convict-built Old Windmill, and the entrance to the 16-hectare Roma Street Parkland. It’s a five-minute downhill walk to the Queen Street Mall.

Only seven of the 50 guest rooms are standards; the others are suites — some with one or two bedrooms — and two-storey lofts. Every room is a different shape and size, and this individuality is complemented by several different interior design themes. All have workstations, mini iPads, docking stations, queen- or king-sized beds, minibars and Nespresso machines.

Some rooms have bathtubs as well as large walk-in showers, and all bathrooms come with robes and slippers, quality toiletries, no-fog mirrors and low-level night-lights. Double-glazed windows keep out the city street noise, and curtains open and close at the touch of a bedside button.

Apart from the restaurant and bar, the hotel has few facilities because of its limited space and heritage listing. However, guests can use the swimming pool at the next-door Novotel Brisbane hotel and have free access to a gymnasium one block away. Helpful staff are happy to arrange anything you need.
